The Thousand Year Tree, Co-created Children’s Book
An incredible journey through time, from seed to fragile giant…
The Thousand Year Tree is a stunning new non-fiction picture book, written and illustrated by children! It celebrates the history our ancient trees have witnessed, and how we can protect them for the future.
The book has been published through a creative collaboration between: the Surrey Hills Society; thirty children from the Weyfield Primary Academy Guildford; author, Lucy Reynolds; illustrator, Katie Hickey; the Guildford Book Festival; the Old Dungate Press; Surrey County Council; 52 Surrey Libraries; and Surrey Hills National Landscape.
Through a series of woodland and in-school workshops, Lucy and Katie worked with the Y4 children at the Weyfield Primary Academy to connect with the trees, research their history, learn about conservation, and create the beautiful poetry and artwork for the book.
In addition, over 620 children from all across Surrey took part in a competition to design the book’s inside covers, with prizes being announced by the one and only Kes Gray, and winning entrants having their creations printed in the finished book.
In partnership with The Guildford Book Festival, Lucy and Katie have also taken the book out into schools across the county, inspiring thousands of children to become tree champions!
The book is available through Waterstones and all good bookshops, with 100% of proceeds going to charity.
